REVIEW FOR FEBRUARY 10, 2004 (MARCH 23, 2004)
WALL OF SLEEP
OVERLOOK THE ALL
PSYCHEDOOMELIC RECORDS, 2003
4 OUT OF 5
Considering I'm still trying to get out of this fucking depression (I swear to crap, why am I doing this sometimes while feeling like my senses are being raped by a fat black man wearing a "I HATE WHITEY" T-shirt?) I shouldn't really be reviewing doom metal releases, but here I am doing it anyway. Anyhow, Wall of Sleep is a band borne from the ashes of Hungarian doomsters Mood so Overlook The All isn't exactly a "debut" album, but it's a more than credible effort from the band. The band owes a lot, stylistically and otherwise, to Black Sabbath (there's even a cover version of "The Wizard" on this EP) and Sabbath-esque doom is exactly what the doctor ordered here. Overlook The All isn't anything earth-shattering but it's a more than credible stoner doom release. I imagine this style of Sabbathia has been heard before one hundred different times by 100 different bands by 100 different people but for what this album is it's an enjoyable listen. The standout here is the Black Sabbath cover, what with the harmonica solo and all. The vocals are sung in a lower register, granted, but Wall Of Sleep stands by its heroes and does a credible job of mimicry on Overlook The All. There's not much to say about this EP, really; it's over in twenty minutes and I can't remember much of it afterwards. I'm looking forward to the full-length Slow But Not Dead, though. I just hope I feel better hearing that than I felt hearing this. Great fun, being sick and clinically depressed. You should try it sometime.
