REVIEW FOR FEBRUARY 5, 2000+4
THE MOONEY SUZUKI
ELECTRIC SWEAT
GAMMON/COLUMBIA, 2002/2003
I like reviewing non-metal albums. It gets all of you pissed off. Everytime I invade so-called "hipster" territory I like to urinate on it by being honest in my reviews, because...well, if I don't review what the assorted dipshits at The Charlatan passed up, it'd never get reviewed. So there.
Obviously, The Mooney Suzuki is re-releasing Electric Sweat to cash in on the "garage rock" revival that exploded last year. I wish the major labels would focus on real garage rock bands like Cheater Slicks and whoever's on Crypt Records instead, but that would just be too real. It's quite obvious this album is about packaging: the mod look, the "we're awesome rock stars look at the glory of rock I love Marc Bolan" posing, and the retro-packaging with the old Columbia logo and everything. I just wish Electric Sweat was, you know, any good. The sound of The Mooney Suzuki is respectable enough, 1960's-esque psychedelia/R&B respectful to the era, but it's rather rote and doesn't provide me with any thrills. I want shitty punk with bad production and a singer who screams like he just lost his testicles, and The Mooney Sukuzi provides me with none of those three options. Then again, I expected this from poseurs. Seriously, look at the picture to the left and tell me I'm wrong. TELL ME I'M WRONG.
By the way, Electric Sweat comes with six videos of the band dancin' it up at some Texas record joint. Still, the album's about thirty-seven dollars here in Canada so wait until Electric Sweat hits the used record bins. Or don't buy it. Your choice.
